1. Across the board pay raises for every worker: Unions on average win 20-25% raises for workers as well as higher yearly raises. Average yearly raises for unionized workers are 5-6% vs the 1-2% we receive now.
2. More sick days/vacation days as well as protected holiday pay: Unionized employees on average get 10 sick days a year vs the 2-3 most employees get at Chartwells now. Unionized employees also get 50-100% more vacation hours vs non union employees. Holiday pay would also be protected and enshrined within a union contract, management wouldn’t get to pick and choose like they did to many people last December
3. Job security: It’s much harder for management to fire/layoff unionized employees due to protections that would be enshrined in a union contract vs now where employees can be let go for any reason with no push back. Union reps would also protect/defend employees from write ups/disciplinary action from management.
4. Union Reps: With a union we would be able to have union reps at each location. Think of them as a super charged HR that actually cares about/fights for employees. They would help give workers more of a voice with management when it comes to filing grievances and any other issues that might come up. Union reps would be elected by the workers at each location as well and any worker could try to run to be one.
5. Unions are democracies: All workers would have a vote/voice when it comes to union matters, whether voting for union reps, authorizing strikes, as well as our union contract with management. Workers cannot be forced into strikes, strikes need an 80%+ majority vote to happen.
6. Health Care: Unionized jobs on average have access to affordable health care with little to no deductible vs the plans Chartwells offers now with $3000+ deductibles
7. Guaranteed hours/schedules: The hours/schedules employees are entitled to would be enshrined in an union contract and not at management’s will like it is now. Whether it’s a slow business day or cuts, management wouldn’t be able to take your hours away or send you home early. Schedules would also be normalized without days getting taken away with no prior notice
